Do I need to use the JETPCL.WID file supplied?
No, this is not a required data file. It is needed only to emulate some of the older LaserJet Cartridge fonts by substituting them with similar Microtype fonts using different character widths. Cartridges are very rarely used so we do not recommend using a WID file. Similar to a LaserJet printer without a cartridge, JetPCL will act differently when running with a WID file. It can have an effect on font selection. For example, if a PCL file requests one of the older Helvetica fonts, JetPCL will act like a LaserJet that does not have a cartridge if no WID file is being used. If a WID file is being used it will emulate the Helvetica fonts found in the older LaserJet cartridges. This can result in a completely different final image depending on what the original PCL driver was expecting. If it was expecting Helvetica to exist on the printer then using the WID file is best, otherwise it may not be best. In order to run without a WID file, simply remove any –W switch and delete the JETPCL.WID file from the JetPCL home directory.
